Gelli Plate Printing

Updated: Mar 26

Gelli-Plate Printing

Gelli Plate Printing (often called gel printing) is a simple, versatile form of mono-printing that uses a soft, flexible printing plate - usually made from synthetic gel - to create layered, textured prints.

A Gelli plate is a reusable, gelatin-like surface that holds paint temporarily. Instead of carving or etching (like traditional printmaking), you apply paint directly to the plate, manipulate it and then transfer it onto paper or fabric.

How it works is you spread a thin layer of paint and other media onto the plate using a roller. You can then imprint into the surface things like textures, stencils, string, leaves, pretty much anything that will leave an impression in the paint.

Next you place paper on top of the plate and press gently. When you peel away the paper you have a monoprint (a one-off print). Repeating the process with different colours or mediums allows you to build up layers and textures to build complex and unique designs.

The final artwork can then be used in a variety of ways eg., creating your own artwork for framing, using the papers in your journals and card making.

It's a popular process because it's easy for even an absolute beginner to create their own unique artwork. Other than a gel plate, and it is possible to make your own if you feel so inclined, no special equipment is required other than some basic supplies, readily available.

Our next Gelli Plate Printing class is Friday 12 June 2026 - why not book now?
