Gelli-plate printing (often called gel printing) is a simple, versatile form of mono-printing that uses a soft, flexible printing plate—usually made from synthetic gel—to create layered, textured prints.
What it is
A Gelli plate is a reusable, gelatin-like surface that holds paint temporarily. Instead of carving or etching (like traditional printmaking), you apply paint directly to the plate, manipulate it, and then transfer it onto paper or fabric.
How it works (basic process)
Apply paint/ink
Spread a thin layer of acrylic paint onto the plate using a roller.
Create texture or patterns
Press objects into the paint—like leaves, stencils, bubble wrap, string, or even your fingers—to make designs.
Pull a print
Place paper on top of the plate and press gently.
Reveal the image
Peel the paper away to see a mono-print (a one-of-a-kind print).
Layering (optional)
Repeat with more colours and textures to build complex designs.
Why people love it
Beginner-friendly: No press or special equipment needed
Highly experimental: Easy to play with textures and layers
Fast results: You get a finished print in seconds
Reusable plate: Clean with water and start again
